As a mother of 4 boys (Grace too) I understand that I will get to an age where I will not be able to beat my children at stuff. Old age will set in and I will not see as well, think as well, run or throw as well, the list goes on and on. I know that right now there is a chance I might not win at a game of pig or a sprint for the winning touchdown at the family Thanksgiving football game. They are bigger than me, stronger than me and faster than me, much to my competitive chagrin! That is why this weekend was so sweet. I tasted VICTORY that I believe I will enjoy for a while.
My oldest son David is in to darts now, it’s the cheapest form of entertainment, once purchased. Last Friday he invited friends (so thankful I was included) over to his home to have drinks and darts after the Darkest Night Service. Yes, after we recognized that Jesus had died on the cross, then we celebrated because we knew how the story turned out. Well, David and his friend David challenged myself and my younger sister Kelly to a match! I pondered this as I saw Kelly throw a few and thought, this was doable. Off we went. With lots of giggles and smack talking (by me) we threw our way to a WIN! The boys were not happy to be beaten by a couple of girls.
Then Easter Sunday came, Jesus rose, and the team Team David/2 challenged me again at Easter Brunch. With the family advising “Don’t do it, you might lose your victory”, but never one to listen, decided to take the challenge with a pastor as my team mate …SCOOTER G. Come on down! (we needed a little God on our side). May I say that we kicked their Cottontail-ed Easter Butts!
2 Victories for the Old Red Mare! David growling in his best grumpy angry man voice, “Luck!”.
Scooter hands raised high yelled, “To God the glory!” as he took a victory lap around the pool!
I just smiled. I had beat him twice.
Finally, David #2 had us over Easter night (again, thankful for being included) for a quiet evening of eats, fire-pitting and… yes darts. This time David had new partner, Jon (who was quite good, yikes). They were on a streak and had won 3 rounds before they threw the gauntlet down at my old feet. I chose Heather, Andrews sweet girlfriend who is working on her PHD and the D doesn’t stand for darts. We slowly closed things out with them, neck and neck when we both needed just 2 things to grab the victory. I stepped up to the line with three darts in hand, needing one 16 and one bulls-eye. My first dart sailed into 16, hum I hope they are watching. The next found it’s place right in the bulls-eye. YES! I screamed with a squeal and arm pump!
With one dart left in my hand I was done, I had beat my oldest son David 3 times over Easter weekend.
She has risen INDEED and can still win at something. Mom’s not out yet! David thanks for not counting me out and providing the fun, memories and love. The victory was sweeter than any candy found in my Easter basket this year, and proved that cheap entertainment can be an old moms best friend!
