Is it yours to carry?

My traveling buddy through life...My Sister!

Yesterday my sister and I were sitting at lunch discussing the interview that Oprah did with Tyler Perry. What an emotional and difficult interview, to do and to watch. Here is a handsome, talented, successful and amazingly funny man sharing the most painful events of his life. Totally raw, vulnerable and exposed. What courage that took, not to mention all the lives he touched, moved and encouraged to speak out and find ways to heal their wounds.  What was so loudly unspoken is that if he could speak of his hurts and find ways to heal, so could others. He was incredibly brave and humble.

In this conversation, my sister brought up something Tyler said to apply to our lives. It has to do with the fact that as we are brought up we are given things to carry. Things like fear, guilt and beliefs that are of no value to creating a sense of well-being within us. She said “It’s not ours to carry.” She was right. We need to remember where we end and someone else begins. We have a choice as adults to put down and decide what and how we will define ourselves. What we know to be true, honest and good within the reality of our lives. Allowing ourselves to stand as one, healthy and whole, not carrying someone else’s luggage through out our days.

So, I unpacked, put down and let go of a few things that were feeling heavy, cumbersome and cluttering my life. Taking up space where new healthy thoughts and blessings could reside if given permission and a place to live. Thanks Kristin for understanding what was packed into the suitcases of our lives years ago and loving me enough to say it’s time for a spring cleaning!

What a great picture of you and your sister. And yes..we can’t fix things. Not natural catastrophes or friend’s marriages. We can’t carry everyone’s hurt around…but we can pray and ask the Holy Spirit’s guidance in how to best help. love this post.
