“Individually we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” Ryunosuke Satoro
As I was in NYC this past weekend I found myself in Grand Central Station switching from train to subway, surrounded by massive humanity. It always amazes me when I go to a big city how many of us there are taking up residence on this big ball we call earth. It happened to be 5:00 on Friday afternoon and people were in a big hurry to be somewhere, it was the end of the week and the weekend was starting. I stood and looked at the hundreds and hundreds of people from all backgrounds, ages, gender and ethnicity racing from one place to the next, I suddenly felt small, my life felt a bit insignificant, but I also felt connected, not so alone. It is not all about me…..We are in this all together with our one God who loves us all and wants the best for each of us…..yes I felt connected.
It is always humbling to see how many of us there really are. We live our lives in silos only experiencing what makes an impact in our life, our world. Everything seems so big and important, and it is. But when you look out at the masses you begin to realize that everyone has a life and it is big. They go home to the the joys, the struggles, the victories and defeats just like us. We are all in this together doing the best we know how. We have a commonality that we sometimes miss because we are to caught in the big-ness of our life. I think it does a body and soul good to step out of the familiar and step into another’s world, even if it is for a minute in the subway, mission trip or on a sidewalk in a suburban neighborhood. Stop, look, listen, smell and take in humanity and all the differences it has to offer……Red and Yellow, Black and White….We are precious in His Sight….. and we are in this together!
This reminds me of what I was reading this morning. The commentator likened it to — everyone sitting down at a table. We are all seated around the same table. No one first, no one second — yet all together. Love your insights. j
